Yaba Psychiatric Hospital witnesses 100% admissions increase

In 2023, the influx of patients into the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Yaba, notably doubled. This significant rise was disclosed by the hospital's leading authority, Dr. Olugbenga Owoeye, during the event, “A Day With the Medical Director,” an Annual Score Card presentation held in Lagos on a recent Wednesday.

Dr. Owoeye revealed that the hospital witnessed a 7% surge in new patient cases, complemented by a 3% increase in recurring patient visits, encompassing both male and female demographics. He pointed out that this upswing in admissions is closely linked to the escalating mental health issues in the nation, propelled by the current economic climate and various other societal factors.

In his words: "2023 marked a noticeable 3% rise in overall patient visits. The rate of new patient cases ascended by 7% in contrast to the previous year’s stagnation. Astonishingly, the rate of patient admissions skyrocketed by 100%, with drug-related cases alone climbing by 10%, while the discharge rate conversely dipped by 10%."
