Third Mainland Bridge Shut Down for Repairs on Jan 9th

In an unexpected turn of events, the bustling city of Lagos braces itself as the iconic Third Mainland Bridge is slated for a temporary closure. The bridge, a vital artery in the city's transport network, will see its gates shut this Tuesday, January 9th, for urgent repair works.

Rewinding to November 2023, the bridge underwent similar repairs, briefly reopening on December 21st to alleviate the heavy holiday traffic. Now, as the new year unfolds, the Lagos State Government announces another pause in the bridge's operation.

Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the state's Commissioner for Transportation, unveiled the news in a January 4th statement. This closure, he explains, is a continuation of the Federal Ministry of Works' efforts to refurbish various sections of this critical structure.

This time, attention turns to the Iyana Oworonshoki-Adeniji Adele stretch, earmarked for comprehensive restoration. "This phase is an extension of the initial work started last November, with a focus on the ramps, and now broadening to encompass other areas of the bridge," Osiyemi elaborates.

In a bid to lessen the impact of this disruption, Osiyemi outlines a meticulous schedule. Between midnight and noon, the bridge will serve those journeying from the Mainland to the Island. Conversely, from noon until midnight, the pathway is reserved for travelers heading from the Island to the Mainland. The Eko Bridge stands as the alternative route for opposite flows during these time slots.

"This timetable is strategically set to align with peak traffic flows, aiming to minimize commuting hassles," Osiyemi adds.

He concludes with an appeal for public cooperation, emphasizing the role of traffic officials in smoothing this transition. "Your understanding and cooperation are invaluable. Together, let's ensure our roads remain safe and efficient," he urges.
