Civil Society Groups urge President Tinubu not to sign PRO-LGBTQ Agreement with the EU-ACP

Nigerian Civil Society groups emphatically implore Bola Tinubu to abstain from endorsing an agreement with the European Union, a pact poised to decriminalize LGBTG practices within Nigeria.

As of today, November 15, 2023, the European Union (EU) designates this day to entice African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) nations to ink an LGBT agreement fostering collaboration between the EU and ACP countries.

Over the past several months, numerous assemblies have transpired between EU and ACP parliamentarians, earnestly endeavoring to secure the signatures of ACP leaders on the contentious LGBT agreement.

One noteworthy rendezvous unfolded in Brussels on November 28, 2022, where EU and ACP Ministers convened, applying potential pressure to persuade ACP Ministers and, subsequently, heads of governments to endorse the LGBT agreement.

A parallel gathering, sharing the same objective, occurred in Brussels from June 19 to 28, 2023.

Civil society members in Nigeria vehemently implore Tinubu to eschew endorsing the agreement, deeming it a transgression against the cherished values of Nigerians.

Sonnie Ekwowusi, Chairman of the Human Rights Committee, vehemently asserted, "This proposition conflicts with Nigerian law, specifically the Safe-Sex Provision Act of 2014, enacted during Jonathan's administration and still in force. Why would we commit to a document advocating LGBT promotion? It is utterly unacceptable; Nigeria must unequivocally refuse."
